Balu Chaudhari was born in the scenic village of Bhor in Maharashtra in south central India. Bhor is famous for its beautiful blue river Neera. Balu recalls that his childhood was colored by the bright glow of reflected light off the surface of this river and the limitless vision of vast fields of barley and rice. Although he was unaware during his childhood that he was going to become an artist, he was mesmerized by the vivacious green color of the earth and the reflection of light in blue water and thus his memories of childhood turned into memories of color. He completed his degree in Fine art from Pune University.
Initially he began working in graphic arts. When he moved toward canvas he carried in his work some of the techniques from graphics, like collography, which is very much evident in his recent work. This assimilation of two different mediums gives an extraordinary fineness to his abstract forms. His forms share affinity with generative symbols of nature; like leaves with their beautiful veins, and seeds which contain in their kernel the very essence of life. Balu says that through his use of symbols he intends to bring forth an idea in his work, that each and every particle in nature is a mirror of creation. This idea functions in the same manner as nature does; it manifests out of the invisible energy of creation. Through his forms he depicts the same process; expansion out of stillness. In their silent motion he reveals that creation is also a movement, situated at the heart of every particle of nature. His colors are mostly deep and submarine which shows that he strives to depict the world beneath the surface, away from the apparent. Like fathomless sea water, where light mingles with darkness to create a dreamy blue, his forms float on the canvas, like ideas do in our minds.
