Pravin Kedar

Pravin has been active in the field of visual arts for the last 17 years. He received his MFA from the prestigious J.J. School of Art Mumbai, in Maharashtra. During this period he has exhibited his work in 13 group shows and two solo shows. In addition to this he has been awarded state and national fellowships and artist awards for his contributions in the field of Indian painting.

Pravin paints on the smooth ivory surface of Canson Fabriano watercolor paper. He uses a variety of water-based dyes as well as pigment powders in rich earth tones. On the surface of his painting he adds fine imagery with carbon black, silver or gold Rotring ink pens. In order to bring mass and dimension to his forms he uses gouache color. The preparation of his canvas and the initial stages of his work show the impact of a graphic arts background in his technique. He initially prepares his canvas without using any brushes so that independent of color in water, the substrate can remain untouched, unregulated. Texture is created when color is mixed with water, revealing spaces of dark and light. Pravin’s miniaturist abstract forms manifest non-intention; a stimulation of the artist’s imagination which gives depth to the fluorescent darkness of the background, sitting still on the canvas.

Pravin Kedar’s work illustrates how silent spaces can reverberate through the dark canvas. The darkness in his canvas is not blind; it glitters with the faint dusting of gold or silver color as if particles of light are being sprinkled on the shadowy surface. An avowed spiritualist, Pravin Kedar believes that in our search for inner light we journey through the darkness of our inner self. This one can see in his work.
